Bahia Grass

Bahia Grass
(Paspalum Notatum)

A good all-around grass that has increased in use due to its ability to survive periods of drought. It is also a relatively low maintenance grass with less disease and insect problems of some of the other warm season grasses. "Pensacola" is the best known bahia grass is is widely cultivated in the USA. It is a perennial grass that last indefinitely.

Its drought resistance, coupled with the ease of establishment from seeds, and its resistance to diseases and pests, have made it a popular choice. It also produces a durable sod which is able to withstand the impact of moderate traffic. The drought resistance rate is high because of the deep and extensive root system. Roots can extend as deep as 8-10 feet. It is one of the few tropical grasses that will grow as well in the shade as in the sun.

Bahia grass is easy to start from seed; survives in a variety of soils from sandy to clays, grows well on infertile dry soils, withstands close grazing and traffic wear; grows thick enough to complete with weeds, creates a beautiful light green lawn with proper care and fertilizer; and responds well to nitrogen applications which creates a darker green color.

  • Description: Bahia grass is a low growing, creeping perennial with stolons and stout rhizomes. Stolons are pressed firmly to the ground, have short internodes and root freely from the nodes forming a dense sod. Stems range from 6-28 inches occasionally reaching about 40 inches. The leaves are linear, 2-8 inches long, tapering to a fine point.
  • Seeding Rate: Minimum 40 pounds pure live see/acre
  • Seeding Depth: Surface sow to not over ½".
  • Growth: A low growing perennial spreading by short, stout, woody runners and by seed. The runners have many large fibrous roots which form dense, tough sods.
  • Blooming Period: March-May
  • Uses:
    • Lawns
    • Golf Courses
    • Roads Sides
    • Erosion control
    • Pastures
    • Hay production
    • Forage (Is valued for its dense cover, productivity, ease of establishment and persistence)
    • Seed production is a secondary crop benefit for many farmers and ranchers in the South
    • Animal production on bahia grass is acceptable; crude protein is about 14% with seasonal fluctuations; total dry matter digestibility ranges from 40-53% for grazing. In the USA, bahia grass pastures fertilized with high nitrogen blends of fertilizer can carry up to five head of cattle per acre. If fertilized, it can produce up to 3 tons of high quality hay per cutting. Proteins can be as high as 16% if harvested properly.
